Help Needed!!!!!

2007-02-25 02:33:30

PLEASE READ - EMAIL ME IF YOU VOTE AND I WILL SEND YOU A FREE COPY OF HIS CD!!!

PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY!! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!
THIS WILL GET HIM A RECORDING CONTRACT IF HE WINS!!!!!

Hey guys....

Sorry for not being online much lately....entirely toooooo much has been going on. Some good, some bad. I will explain later.

As for now...I have a special request!

I know most of you watch American Idol....

Well there is a very dear friend of mine that lives here in Eufaula named Brandon Barker.
He is 15 years old and has big dreams of becoming a singer.
Brandon is the one that sang to Savanna at the Fund Raiser Pageant for Kevin Suggs that was held here in Eufaula by Crowning Beauty.

While such aspirations might seem far-fetched for a 15-year-old from Eufaula, Barker just took one big step closer to making his dream come true in the High School Talent Search 2005.

Barker made the top 10 out of some 200 contestants in a talent search sponsored by the National High School Coaches Association. Like the pop culture phenomenon "American Idol," Barker now hopes his fans will rally to support him.

The top 10 boys will be narrowed to six based on Internet voting at www.nhsca.com. Those who want to vote for Brandon can log onto the website, click the box at the top center of the website, which says "High School Talent Search 2005," and then follow instructions after selecting "Boys performances."

There is one difference from "American Idol." Each vote costs $1.95.

The votes are paid for through Paypal accounts, which are set up when voters follow instructions on the NHSCA website.

Barker said the proceeds go toward the expense of bringing the top six boys and top six girls to a week-long competition co-sponsored by the NHSCA and Five String Productions in Virginia Beach, Va., Aug. 27. The winner on both the boys and girls sides will land recording contracts.

"My dream is just to go to the top," Barker said. "But at this point, I'm just trying to get to Virginia Beach."

He's been a regular performer at community events like Relay for Life and Indian Summer. He also sang recently at Wallace Community College's graduation ceremonies in Eufaula.

He's gained enough experience the past two years that nerves no longer get the best of him. Even though he's only 15, Barker shows great stage presence and poise. At the Relay for Life this spring, he tied another singer for "Relay Idol" after performing "Be My Baby Tonight." He wowed the crowd and even jumped down from the stage to the delight of screaming fans.

"I really had to work on it," Barker said. "I had to get used to the crowd. Now it's fine and I don't even think about it. I just get up there and put all I have into it."

Those who want to support Barker can log onto www.nhsca.com and cast their votes for the $1.95 fee.

"You can vote as many times as you want to, but every time you do, it's $1.95," Brandon's dad, Dale, said.

Voting lasts until July 10, and the finals are slated for Aug. 27.

Those who log onto the website will find recorded video performances and sign up to vote can download. Brandon recorded three songs, "Be My Baby Tonight" by John Michael Montgomery, "Stay," an oldie by Maurice Williams, and "I'm Already There," by Lonestar.

To vote for Brandon, log onto www.nhsca.com and click on "High School Talent Search 2005" and follow instructions. Or to sponsor Brandon, call (334) 687-8048. If you pay by paypal...you must go check your email to get your user id and password to go back to the site and vote!

I'm passing this on since I thought it was so well said...not to start a political debate...but I think it really sums up some fantastic points and historical facts that weren't brought to light previously..

Another Voice on Katrina

COMMENTARY

Blame Amid the Tragedy

By BOB WILLIAMS
September 6, 2005

As the devastation of Hurricane Katrina continues to shock and sadden the nation, the question on many lips is, Who is to blame for the inadequate response?

As a former state legislator who represented the legislative district most impacted by the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, I can fully understand and empathize with the people and public officials over the loss of life and property.

Many in the media are turning their eyes toward the federal government, rather than considering the culpability of city and state officials. I am fully aware of the challenges of having a quick and responsive emergency response to a major disaster. And there is definitely a time for accountability; but what isn't fair is to dump on the federal officials and avoid those most responsible -- local and state officials who failed to do their job as the first responders. The plain fact is, lives were needlessly lost in New Orleans due to the failure of Louisiana's governor, Kathleen Blanco, and the city's mayor, Ray Nagin.

The primary responsibility for dealing with emergencies does not belong to the federal government. It belongs to local and state officials who are charged by law with the management of the crucial first response to disasters. First response should be carried out by local and state emergency personnel under the supervision of the state governor and his/her emergency operations center.

The actions and inactions of Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin are a national disgrace due to their failure to implement the previously established evacuation plans of the state and city. Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin cannot claim that they were surprised by the extent of the damage and the need to evacuate so many people. Detailed written plans were already in place to evacuate more than a million people. The plans projected that 300,000 people would need transportation in the event of a hurricane like Katrina. If the plans had been implemented, thousands of lives would likely have been saved.

In addition to the plans, local, state and federal officials held a simulated hurricane drill 13 months ago, in which widespread flooding supposedly trapped 300,000 people inside New Orleans. The exercise simulated the evacuation of more than a million residents. The problems identified in the simulation apparently were not solved.

A year ago, as Hurricane Ivan approached, New Orleans ordered an evacuation but did not use city or school buses to help people evacuate. As a result many of the poorest citizens were unable to evacuate. Fortunately, the hurricane changed course and did not hit New Orleans, but both Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin acknowledged the need for a better evacuation plan. Again, they did not take corrective actions. In 1998, during a threat by Hurricane George, 14,000 people were sent to the Superdome and theft and vandalism were rampant due to inadequate security. Again, these problems were not corrected.

The New Orleans contingency plan is still, as of this writing, on the city's Web site, and states: "The safe evacuation of threatened populations is one of the principle [sic] reasons for developing a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan." But the plan was apparently ignored.

Mayor Nagin was responsible for giving the order for mandatory evacuation and supervising the actual evacuation: His office of Emergency Preparedness (not the federal government) must coordinate with the state on elements of evacuation and assist in directing the transportation of evacuees to staging areas. Mayor Nagin had to be encouraged by the governor to contact the National Hurricane Center before he finally, belatedly, issued the order for mandatory evacuation. And sadly, it apparently took a personal call from the president to urge the governor to order the mandatory evacuation.

The city's evacuation plan states: "The city of New Orleans will utilize all available resources to quickly and safely evacuate threatened areas." But even though the city has enough school and transit buses to evacuate 12,000 citizens per fleet run, the mayor did not use them. To compound the problem, the buses were not moved to high ground and were flooded. The plan also states that "special arrangements will be made to evacuate persons unable to transport themselves or who require specific lifesaving assistance. Additional personnel will be recruited to assist in evacuation procedures as needed." This was not done.

The evacuation plan warned that "if an evacuation order is issued without the mechanisms needed to disseminate the information to the affected persons, then we face the possibility of having large numbers of people either stranded and left to the mercy of a storm, or left in an area impacted by toxic materials." That is precisely what happened because of the mayor's failure.

Instead of evacuating the people, the mayor ordered the refugees to the Superdome and Convention Center without adequate security and no provisions for food, water and sanitary conditions. As a result people died, and there was even rape committed, in these facilities. Mayor Nagin failed in his responsibility to provide public safety and to manage the orderly evacuation of the citizens of New Orleans. Now he wants to blame Gov. Blanco and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In an emergency the first requirement is for the city's emergency center to be linked to the state emergency operations center. This was not done.

The federal government does not have the authority to intervene in a state emergency without the request of a governor. President Bush declared an emergency prior to Katrina hitting New Orleans, so the only action needed for federal assistance was for Gov. Blanco to request the specific type of assistance she needed. She failed to send a timely request for specific aid.

In addition, unlike the governors of New York, Oklahoma and California in past disasters, Gov. Blanco failed to take charge of the situation and ensure that the state emergency operation facility was in constant contact with Mayor Nagin and FEMA. It is likely that thousands of people died because of the failure of Gov. Blanco to implement the state plan, which mentions the possible need to evacuate up to one million people. The plan clearly gives the governor the authority for declaring an emergency, sending in state resources to the disaster area and requesting necessary federal assistance.

State legislators and governors nationwide need to update their contingency plans and the operation procedures for state emergency centers. Hurricane Katrina had been forecast for days, but that will not always be the case with a disaster (think of terrorist attacks). It must be made clear that the governor and locally elected officials are in charge of the "first response."

I am not attempting to excuse some of the delays in FEMA's response. Congress and the president need to take corrective action there, also. However, if citizens expect FEMA to be a first responder to terrorist attacks or other local emergencies (earthquakes, forest fires, volcanoes), they will be disappointed. The federal government's role is to offer aid upon request.

The Louisiana Legislature should conduct an immediate investigation into the failures of state and local officials to implement the written emergency plans. The tragedy is not over, and real leadership in the state and local government are essential in the months to come. More importantly, the hurricane season is still upon us, and local and state officials must stay focused on the jobs for which they were elected -- and not on the deadly game of passing the emergency buck.

HELP--Changing DayCAre Centers NPR--HELP PLEASE

2007-02-21 13:28:55

OK, my kids have been in the same day care center for almost 2 years now. My daughter never went to any other center, and I am sure my son does not remember other centers. This day care and its staff has been a big part of our family. I love each of the staff members and we are all close to them out side of the center. I know my kids are so attached to them.

However, I am now working in a larger city (If anyone knows are area I work in is Seattle, and the center is in Federal Way). Right now the center is on my way to work. But do to the commute being so long (I am driving approx. 110 miles A DAY) we will be moving closer to my work (as well as DH's work). We will be spending more in utilities and rent (as our power and heat are included in our real cheap rent now). But in a way it will even out when we move (not spending as much on gas if we move). But the stress of the comute will be gone.

Well if we move I will be back tracking about 10 miles to get to the center. I know 10 miles is not much, but in the long run it would be 40 extra miles a day. And I will run into some of the problem I amhaving now. Can I make it in rush hour traffic on time to the center.

I happen to see a day care center on my way to work. The thing is I LOVE IT. I am trying to talk myself into staying at the center we have gone to for so long. But I am not sure now.

The center is in a Federal Building. So WOW, security is big to get in and out. However as a parent you are issued a badge to get through just a little faster. Also on your badge is a strip to open and close all doors you go through (there where two I passed through). Once you got into the center your badge opens the door to the center lobby. You then go through another door that dings real loud to let them know someone is there. You are in the center now. There is a large open room that has gym mats (they also offer toddler tumble), a magnetic wall so kids can stick things up. It is AWESOME. You look around each class room has a lock pad on the door. Your badge allows you to enter each room. That is just the security of the center. So if you ever want MAJOR SECURITY for your day care center find one in a federal building.

They have an awesome curiculum. The kids are actually learning. It is not like the center they are in now where the kid just play all day. They have lessons. Things did not seem chaotic like most centers. The preschool room (where my son would be in) are teaching numbers, and languages (you have a choice between 3 languages because they have teachers come in), they have computers, and so much more. It was like a school classroom. I felt so comfy in there.

Each of the staff members are highly qualified (she had a few that taught at a private school). No, high school students, or anything like that. I swear it was just a mini school for young kids. Not only did they have to pass a regular state back ground check but they had to pass a federal check and security screening (as the center is in a federal building).

Now here is the small problem. My son has a sensory intigartion disorder. That can cause outbursts and what not. With out going into the whole thing you can read about SID's on this site. http://www.tsbvi.edu/Outreach/seehear/fall97/sensory.htm

He also does not take change at all. He is real attached to several of his teachers. One we see on a regular basis outside of the center.

Tatyana (my DD) is super attached to one teacher, and she is attached to my daughter. She has been her care giver for the 2 years my daughter has been alive.

I know all the teachers and will miss them a great deal. I know I could take the kids to visit.

I just have no idea what to do. I talk to DH about it and he says he is leaving it up to me. He thinks the school type setting would be more beneficial to Alex. I am kinda agreeing, but not sure the transition would be good. Now here is the small other catch. Once Ales reaches Kindergarten age he will have to go to a new daycare center (as they do not provide before or after care). He is almost 4 now, and most likely wont start kindergarden tell 6. So you wil have a 4 year old and a 5 (or 6 like my son) in the same room with a 3 year old. With that in mind and the other center does provide it. WHAT SHOUDL I DO?

I am so confused.
